An introduction to the Cognitive Accessibility Institute and how it helps organisations turn
cognitive accessibility into practical, scalable capability.
The cost of exclusion. This slide shows the economic cost of exclusion.
At a global level, excluding disabled people from employment is estimated to cost between
$3.8 and $8.8 trillion every year. That is a disability-wide figure, not a neurodivergence
only estimate, but the country examples show the scale of the problem.
The autism employment gap costs the UK around £14.5 billion annually.
Adult ADHD is associated with an estimated $122.8 billion in annual costs in the United
States, while ADHD among children and adolescents adds a further $33.2 billion.
In Australia, the estimated annual cost of ADHD is $12.76 billion.
These figures come from different studies, so they should not be directly compared.
The important point is that exclusion creates measurable economic loss through unemployment,
lower productivity, increased support costs and missed participation.
COGAI helps organisations address that loss by making work, services and customer journeys
more cognitively accessible. There are many ways that a lack of cognitive accessibility
can create barriers for customers, employees and organisations. These barriers affect whether
people can understand information, make decisions, complete journeys and participate independently.
For this presentation, I have grouped them into seven core friction points. As we explore each
one, I will also introduce the COGAI courses that can help organisations build the capability to
address it. Organisations do not need to tackle everything at once. The important thing is to
identify the greatest area of friction and take the first practical step. Let us begin with journey
abandonment. 1. Journey abandonment. This happens when a process becomes too confusing, demanding
or difficult to complete. It might be a purchase, an application, a registration process or an
onboarding journey. The person may have every intention of completing it, but the cognitive
demands become too high. When that happens, they leave. For the organisation that can mean a lost
customer, an incomplete application, a failed transaction or someone who now requires additional
support. Courses that help. The Foundation Certificate in Cognitive Accessibility or FCE
helps people recognise the cognitive demands that cause users to lose understanding or direction.
The onboarding experience and performance course or OXP focuses more specifically on improving
onboarding, completion and early participation. But abandonment often begins before the person
leaves. It frequently begins with poor communication. 2. Poor communication. This includes jargon,
ambiguous language, unclear instructions and messages that do not explain what the person
needs to do next. When communication is difficult to understand, people are forced to interpret,
remember and make assumptions. That increases errors, delays and frustration.
Clear communication is not simply about shortening sentences or removing difficult words.
It is about making the purpose, required action and likely outcome understandable.
Courses that help. The FCE provides the foundation for understanding human comprehension and
cognitive accessibility. The Cognitive Accessibility Ambassador course or CAA helps leaders and teams
improve communication clarity and embed cognitively accessible practice across services and operations.
Poor communication becomes even harder to navigate when people are presented with
too much information at once. 3. Information overload. This happens when people are presented
with excessive content, too many choices or several competing messages. Even when all the
required information is technically available, the person may struggle to identify what matters most.
They can lose track of the task, forget an earlier instruction or become uncertain about which option
to choose. The results may be hesitation, confusion or complete disengagement.
Courses that help. The FCE helps teams understand cognitive load and how information structure
affects comprehension. The Cognitive Accessibility in Learning Environments course or CALE focuses
on reducing hidden cognitive demands within learning, training and assessment. Where information
is generated or presented through artificial intelligence, the Cognitive Accessibility in AI
Systems course or CAIS helps teams make AI outputs clearer, more structured and safer to use.
When people cannot confidently understand the information or their choices,
another barrier starts to appear. 4. Fear of making mistakes. This is particularly important
in high-risk journeys such as payments, banking, healthcare, recruitment and government services.
People may worry that choosing the wrong option will cost them money, affect an application or
create consequences they cannot easily reverse. When choices and consequences are unclear,
confidence falls. People may delay, seek assistance or abandon the journey completely.
5. Courses that help. The FCE helps teams recognise how uncertainty and excessive
cognitive demand affect decision-making. The Cognitive Decision Design for AI Systems course
or CDD focuses on designing AI-supported decisions that preserve human understanding,
control and the ability to challenge an outcome. The OXP course also helps organisations make
onboarding decisions, expectations and next steps clearer. And when someone does make a mistake,
the next question is whether the system helps them recover. 5. Difficult error recovery.
Many systems tell people that something has gone wrong without clearly explaining what happened or
how to fix it. An error message may identify the problem but still leave the person unsure
about what they need to do next. Sometimes previously entered information disappears,
the person is returned to an earlier stage or the entire process must be repeated.
Accessible error recovery should reassure the person, explain the problem and provide a clear
route forward. Without that support, a small mistake can become a major barrier.
Courses that help. The FCE helps people understand why error prevention and recovery
are essential parts of cognitive accessibility. The CAA helps organisations embed clearer and
more consistent approaches across teams and services. Where automated systems or AI influence
the journey, CAIS and CDD help teams consider clarity, predictability, human control and recovery.
These existing barriers are now being amplified by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence.
6. The increasing AI gap. AI is changing how organisations communicate, make decisions and
deliver services. But when cognitive accessibility is not built into these systems,
AI can increase confusion rather than reduce it. Automated content may be inconsistent.
Conversational interfaces may be unpredictable. Decisions may be difficult to understand,
verify or challenge. People may not know whether they are communicating with a person,
an automated system or a combination of both. The faster AI develops, the greater the risk
that people with cognitive disabilities and neurodivergent conditions are left behind.
Courses that help. The CAIS course focuses on making AI systems and outputs clearer, safer,
more structured and more reliable for human use. The CDD course focuses specifically on AI-supported
decisions, ensuring that people can understand what is happening and retain meaningful human
control. The FCE provides the wider cognitive accessibility foundation needed by anyone
designing, commissioning or governing these systems. But these barriers do not exist only
inside individual technologies. They are often embedded across the wider organisation.
7. Inaccessible organisational systems. Recruitment, onboarding, workplace technology,
training, customer support and internal communication can all create cognitive barriers.
These barriers are rarely caused by one person or one team. They emerge when responsibility is
fragmented and no one has clear ownership of cognitive accessibility. That is why this cannot
be solved through isolated fixes or a single accessibility audit. It requires organisational
capability. Courses that help. The CAA helps leaders and ambassadors embed cognitive
accessibility across teams, systems and organisational practice. The Neuroinclusive
Hiring Practitioner course, or NHP, helps organisations create fairer and more structured
recruitment journeys that assess genuine capability. The OXP course helps improve onboarding,
completion and early performance. The CALE course supports cognitively accessible learning,
development and assessment. Together these courses help organisations address barriers
across the employee and customer lifecycle. The COGAI course pathway. The COGAI course
pathway currently covers seven connected areas. 1. FCE, Foundation Certificate in Cognitive
Accessibility. 2. CAA, Cognitive Accessibility Ambassador. 3. NHP, Neuroinclusive Hiring
Practitioner. 4. CAIS, Cognitive Accessibility in AI Systems. 5. CALE, Cognitive Accessibility
in Learning Environments. 6. CDD, Cognitive Decision Design for AI Systems. 7. OXP,
Onboarding Experience and Performance. These courses overlap intentionally because cognitive
barriers rarely belong to one department. A communication problem can become a customer
service problem. An onboarding problem can become a workforce retention problem. An AI
problem can become a governance, legal or reputational problem. Organisations can begin
with the course that addresses their most immediate need and build wider capability over time.
They do not need to solve everything on the first day. They simply need to start moving in
the right direction. Conclusion
These seven friction points show that cognitive accessibility is not a specialist issue sitting
at the edge of an organisation. It affects customers, employees, productivity, participation,
trust and revenue. COGAI helps organisations build the knowledge and capability needed
