Where the terms overlap

High cognitive load can intensify barriers involving working memory, attention, language processing and executive function. Reducing avoidable load is therefore an important part of cognitive accessibility.

The important difference

Low cognitive load is not automatically accessible. Oversimplifying a design can hide information or remove control. The aim is an understandable, supported task—not the fewest possible words or controls.

What this means in practice

  • Keep essential information visible instead of relying on recall.
  • Group related information and decisions.
  • Avoid interruptions and unnecessary context switching.

Cognitive accessibility should be judged through real tasks and outcomes. A label, checklist or isolated adjustment cannot demonstrate that an entire experience is accessible.

  • Define: agree what outcome the organisation is trying to achieve.
  • Apply: connect guidance to real decisions and responsibilities.
  • Evidence: involve people with varied cognitive access needs.
  • Improve: learn from barriers rather than repeatedly repairing them.
