Where the terms overlap

AI interfaces are often conversational, adaptive and information-heavy. Cognitive accessibility helps teams examine clarity, uncertainty, memory demands, user control and recovery when an AI response is incomplete or wrong.

The important difference

AI accessibility includes access needs beyond cognition and also covers the accessibility of the surrounding interface. Responsible AI has an even broader scope, including fairness, privacy, transparency, safety and accountability.

What this means in practice

  • State when a person is interacting with AI and what it can do.
  • Present uncertainty and consequences in understandable language.
  • Provide a clear human route for correction or appeal.

Cognitive accessibility should be judged through real tasks and outcomes. A label, checklist or isolated adjustment cannot demonstrate that an entire experience is accessible.

  • Evidence: involve people with varied cognitive access needs.
  • Improve: learn from barriers rather than repeatedly repairing them.
