How clear status updates reduce uncertainty in digital services

A submitted form, support request or application can leave a person waiting without knowing whether the service received it or what happens next. When status is invisible, the person has to carry the uncertainty.

Confirm what happened

After a meaningful action, say whether it succeeded, what was saved and whether anything still needs to be done. Use language that names the action rather than a vague ‘done’.

Set expectations for waiting

Give a realistic next step or timeframe where one exists. If a delay changes that expectation, update the person instead of making them infer that the request was lost.

Give a clear outcome

When a decision is made or a case closes, say so plainly and provide the next available route. Clear closure reduces unnecessary checking, chasing and speculation.
