The Biggest AI Threat May Not Be Job Loss...
...it may be cognitive displacement.
In other words, the gradual replacement of human thinking with AI-assisted thinking.
It's amazing what AI can do, but what happens when we stop practising the skills that AI performs for us?
We know AI is becoming increasingly capable of writing, analysing, summarising, deciding, and recommending. That creates enormous opportunities but it also creates a risk that very few organisations are discussing.
These are some of the questions I would ask any organisation investing heavily in AI:
1. If AI reduces effort, does it also reduce understanding?
2.If we outsource too much thinking, do we gradually lose the skills we no longer practise?
3. If organisations optimise for speed, what happens to comprehension, judgement, critical thinking, and human oversight?
So, here's the concern... if cognitive displacement becomes an unintended consequence of AI adoption, the organisations that succeed won't be those that replace humans.
They will be the organisations that understand where human cognition remains essential and design systems that strengthen it rather than weaken it. As AI becomes more powerful, cognitive accessibility, explainability, governance and accountability may become increasingly important.
If so, the question is no longer whether AI can think, it's whether humans will continue to.
